When I say that you should focus on all aspects of your basketball program, that means you should spend time on speed, rebounding, defense, agility and all the other skills necessary to be an excellent player. You don’t want to neglect the skills you already have. But at the same time you don’t want to overdo it. There are times when you need to lower your level of activity. For example, if you’re training for a different sport in the summer you can lower your practice or work out times.
You also want to make sure you’re doing drills that are going to build your upper body. This will help your focus on your vertical. It will also increase your flexibility and strength. And lastly but definitely not least, you need to build your lower body.
Doesn’t Take Much Time Out Of Your Schedule
The lower part of your body is where most players struggle. When I say this, I’m not saying you should be bench pressing 500 pounds. However you should do many different squats, deadlifts, chin ups and other upper body workouts. One of the biggest mistakes I see from new players is that they try to over focus on one aspect of their game. Instead of focusing on areas where they need to improve, they try to over focus on improving all aspects of their game. This is never a good idea because it can result in you becoming another Joe Johnson. Instead of getting better at shooting, you’re becoming better at everything else.
Here’s the secret. There is only one aspect of the game that you need to focus on and that’s the shooting aspect. Other than that, you’re already a great player. So don’t worry about any other aspect of the game. Just focus on shooting. Another mistake players make when they start a basketball program is they try to force it. They force themselves to work harder and longer. This is a bad mistake because the smarter player will always take the break. I’m not saying that you should sit in the corner and put your head down because that’s just dumb.
What I’m saying is that if you’re serious about playing basketball, then you must take the time to focus on one thing. If you want to build a good program, make sure you’re putting that one thing on your to do list. Then go ahead and dedicate the rest of your time into practice. The more practice you get with a basketball program, the better results you’ll have. In the end, the best players are the ones who put in the work and they know how to build a basketball program correctly.
